data governance

Are you aware of what is going on around you? If not, then don’t worry, Ksolves will keep you updated. Today we will talk about the latest news that is making waves around the world. Well, to be precise, it is related to Apache Kafka, the most popular platform these days and Confluent, the one who made Apache Kafka. Let’s check it out.

On 14th September 2021, at the Kafka Summit virtual conference, Confluent announced its new Stream Governance Suite for governing real-time, streaming data. But why are we talking about it? The real reason is this announcement is going to set a new trend in data governance. According to the company,  They are the first such solution which aims to make governance and protection of data-in-motion and data-at-rest comparable.

Stream governance goals and pillars

Confluent’s co-founder and CEO, Jay Kreps clearly explained that Stream Governance targets modern organization’s  two biggest concerns when we talk about data- one how to unlock it and second,  do it safely and in compliance with the industrial data protection frameworks.

He further explained that Stream Governance stands on three pillars- discoverability, traceability and quality of data. Kreps also made a point that because of the way data streaming works, governing should be done on an automated basis on a larger scale.

By popular public demand

Kreps cite that a large number of governance requirements come when data moves, yet mainstream solutions focus more on data-at-rest. Confluent decided to reduce the gap by integrating with mainstream platforms. To put simply, Stream Governance is working hard towards establishing trust in the data moving through a business. However it has no plan to displace existing commercial and open source data governance platforms and frameworks.

Kreps also says that Confluent Stream Governance feature set is 100% customer demand driven and catalyzed by the GDPR, CCPA and other regulations.

Setting a trend around the globe

As per Confluent’s strategy they are intended to keep Stream Governance focused on streaming data, however at certain organizations this scope may not be so narrow. Earlier Confluent has come up with technologies like “Infinite Storage” in its cloud platform. That has allowed Kafka topics to serve as data repositories and not just roadways for data transitioning.

Keep this very fact in mind, the influence of Stream Governance could be on wider horizons and could bring the notion that all datasets can be looked at as special instances of data streams.

Why is data governance important?

No matter what we do, leaving a data stream ungoverned is like leaving your computer unprotected by a firewall. It is unsafe as well as unhygienic. Governing data is an essential thing and should be welcomed as every data must be tracked and protected as well as open and available in a manageable manner.
